Geriatric

It is not uncommon for elderly men and women to find themselves more emotional in later years, especially after the loss of lifelong friends, loved ones and/or the stress of a changing lifestyle. Medical complications and extended illnesses, too, can play a part in anyone’s level of happiness and peace of mind. Research shows, in fact that almost one-fourth of all attempted suicides are by the elderly population.

Feeling anxious or down for an extended period of time is not a normal part of growing old. It is advisable to look for the reasons for depressed moods or mood swings because often these may require therapeutic intervention.

Emotional Problems

With clinical depression or anxiety, a person’s ability to function both mentally and physically is affected, and the trouble may last for weeks, months, or sometimes years. Anxiety problems come in the form of phobias, panic attacks, or becoming obsessive or compulsive in lifestyle. Both anxiety and depression may result from life experiences, so treatment can help these people get back to their former emotional health.

Physical Problems Affecting Behavior

There are some illnesses, like Alzheimer’s, which affect the individual’s emotional and intellectual well-being. It is possible after an accurate diagnosis to provide therapies to help prolong physical and emotional functioning for as long as possible. For family members, it is extremely important to obtain counseling about what to expect, how to handle their own emotional needs, and how to provide their loved one with the best care available.

Kingwood Pines Hospital Can Help

Kingwood Pines Hospital, a behavioral healthcare facility, offers a Geriatric Program tailored to the needs of elderly patients and their families. The program begins with a no-charge assessment. Then a physician will make recommendations about the best treatment alternatives.

Inpatient Treatment

When inpatient hospitalization is recommended, it will involve stabilizing the patient, analyzing medications, and providing therapies based on the recommendations of the treatment team, led by the attending physician. This team works to coordinate each patient’s individual care, to inform family members of progress as well as keeping the family physician informed.

Family Involvement

When a patient is in treatment at Kingwood Pines Hospital, family members are encouraged to become involved in the process. This might include family members being involved in the treatment planning process with the treatment team. Also, family members may participate in inpatient family sessions as ordered by a physician. To make it easy for family members to be involved and informed, Kingwood Pines Hospital can offer 24-hour visitation privileges and access to the nursing staff for progress and status updates.

Treatment is covered in whole or in part most insurance plans. Kingwood Pines Hospital is a member of many preferred provider networks. Our business office will verify and explain benefits upon request. Financial counseling is available and satisfactory financial arrangements can be made to best suit the needs of each family.
